Desmond Tutu is an anti-semite
Yes, that Desmond Tutu, for criticizing the policies of the state of Israel, is now branded an anti-semite.
I can think of few acts more disrespectful to the millions of victims of anti-semitism throughout history than this cheap, tawdry hijacking of their memory. Who looks at these people and asks, 'how could their suffering be of use to me?'.

A friend of mine had a taste of this recently - and it went disturbingly far beyond name-calling:

Tim - I have to say (not condoning anything here btw) that putting political material up as your screensaver in your place of work is a pretty daft thing to do.
What was this literature of his that was impounded?
It wasn't actually his screensaver, it was a couple of postcards and a cloth patch, pinned up in the area around his desk, from what I gather - the sort of place people might usually put family photos, cartoons, etc. The impounded material I imagine was either campaign leaflets or books, or both.
Daft? Quite possibly. Racist? Hardly. Criminal? Clearly not.
Incidentally, I don't imagine anyone would have suffered the same fate if they put up, say, a postcard from Amnesty/Save The Children/RSPB etc - all of them quite plausibly qualifying as "political material". So while it may be "daft" or imprudent not to keep shtum about Palestinian rights in the face of widespread vilification, it could also be construed - quite reasonably - as pretty cowardly if you did.

no absolutely. I quite agree and don't mean to suggest otherwise.
Of course, one shouldn't keep shtum. Just be clever about how and when to speak, given the lamentable state of politics in this country.
