Blair's next war
"This notion that the United States is getting ready to attack Iran is simply ridiculous. (Short pause) And having said that, all options are on the table." (Laughter)
George Bush - press conference, Brussels, 22 February 2005
During the UK election campaign many of New Labour's supporters have stressed that the issue of the war in Iraq, whatever one's view of the government's conduct, belongs firmly in the past. Columnist Polly Toynbee has said that to cast an anti-war vote against the government would be to take "revenge for a war that will never be repeated". Former New Labour minister Robin Cook, who resigned in the run-up to the Iraq war, said that "it is not going to happen again..No 10 knows perfectly well that it cannot repeat the controversy over Iraq". But the case for optimism is tenuous. To present the Iraq war as a unique and unrepeatable event is to fundamentally misrepresent the current global picture and the UK's place within it. In fact Britain could well be involved in further US military action in the near future, perhaps in an assault on Iran as early as next month.
For sixty years Britain's foreign policy has been all but inextricably linked with that of the senior partner in our most significant international alliance; the United States. The nature of US power has tremendous bearing on the fate of the UK. Understanding that power, its motives and our government's relationship with it are essential if we are to properly judge the prospect of the Iraq disaster being repeated.
As US dominance has increased in the post Cold War era, the nature of our closest ally has been changing accordingly. Now in the early 21st century we are faced with an ambitious, militaristic and aggressive hyperpower - one that accepts no limits and tolerates not even the slightest challenge to its dominance. In his recent book "The New American Militarism", Andrew J. Bacevich, West Point Graduate, Vietnam veteran and Professor of International Relations at Boston University, describes these cultural shifts. Bacevich says that American militarism is "a passion pursued in utter disregard of any consequences that might ensue" and in the absence of "dissent offered by any political figure of genuine stature".
The new American militarism manifests itself in a number of ways. Firstly in its scope: "the United States spends more on defense than all other nations in the world together. By 2009 [the Pentagon] budget will exceed the Cold War average by 23 percent -- despite the absence of anything remotely resembling a so-called peer competitor. The primary mission of America's far-flung military establishment is global power projection". Secondly, in the mindset of the military: "the services have come to view outright supremacy as merely adequate and any hesitation in efforts to increase the margin of supremacy as evidence of falling behind". Militarism also manifests itself "through an increased propensity to use force, leading, in effect, to the normalization of war. During the entire Cold War era, from 1945 through 1988, large-scale U.S. military actions abroad totalled a scant six. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, however, they have become almost annual events. Altogether, the tempo of U.S. military interventionism has become nothing short of frenetic". The use of force is now seen as a facet, not a failure of diplomacy. Vice-President Dick Cheney says that force "makes your diplomacy more effective going forward, dealing with other problems". America no longer fights defensively, nor as a last resort.
Accelerating the new American militarism still further are the neo-conservative officials in charge of the White House's Middle East policy; men that, according to Ray McGovern, a CIA analyst for 27 years and former editor of the President's Daily Brief, were routinely referred to in high circles in Washington during the 1980s as "the crazies". McGovern recently warned that these officials, whose value system amounts to 'might makes right', are "now focusing on Iran, which they view as the only remaining obstacle to American domination of the entire oil-rich Middle East. They calculate that, with a docile, corporate-owned press, a co-opted mainstream church, and a still-trusting populace, the United States and/or the Israelis can launch a successful air offensive to disrupt any Iranian nuclear weapons programs - with the added bonus of possibly causing the regime in power in Iran to crumble".
The malignant neo-conservative influence should not be underestimated. Andrew J Bacevich argues that "one aspect of the neoconservative legacy has been to foster the intellectual climate necessary for the emergence of the new American militarism." Their task is "spelling out an 'imperial self-definition' of American purpose". He identifies the five founding convictions of this, the dominant ideology of the US government. First, the certainty that American global dominion is benign. Second, that failure to sustain this imperium would inevitably result in global disorder. Third, that domination is best secured by force. Fourth, a commitment to enhancing American military supremacy. Fifth, and most troubling of all, a hostility toward realism, whether manifesting itself as a deficit of ideals or an excess of caution. These are the core beliefs of the government of Britain's closest ally. Even after four years of the Bush presidency it seems that Britain's political classes have failed to grasp the implications this holds for the future of our country.
Why should the US administration now turn its attention towards Iran? Beyond the general drive for ever-greater supremacy lie two specific, pressing concerns: nuclear power and oil. The Iranian government has been pursuing a nuclear fuel drive which it officially maintains are for non-military purposes but which the US and Israel suspect will culminate in Tehran possessing atomic weapons. Iran is Israel's principle strategic rival in the Middle East and Tel Aviv views any challenge to its military dominance (which includes its own significant nuclear capability) as unconscionable. Israelis are now claiming publicly that Iran could have a nuclear weapon within six months, and Israeli officials have been pressing the issue with the US for the past year and a half. According to some defence experts, several of the Iranian facilities are still under construction and there is only a narrow "window of opportunity" to destroy them - a window that will begin to close this year.
But the primary reason for any future military action is the same reason that western powers have always had for their interest in the affairs of Iran: its stupendous reserves of oil and natural gas. Michael T. Klare, professor of peace and world security studies at Hampshire College, recently set out the significance of this factor in current decision making: "Iran houses the second-largest pool of untapped petroleum in the world. With this much oil - about one-tenth of the world's estimated total supply - Iran is certain to play a key role in the global energy equation. And it is not just oil that Iran possesses in great abundance, but also natural gas....approximately 16% of total world reserves. Iran also sits athwart the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which, daily, 40% of the world's oil exports pass. In addition, Iran is becoming a major supplier of oil and natural gas to China, India, and Japan, thereby giving Tehran additional clout in world affairs. It is these geopolitical dimensions of energy, as much as Iran's potential to export significant quantities of oil to the United States, that undoubtedly govern the administration's strategic calculations. When considering Iran's role in the global energy equation, therefore, Bush administration officials have two key strategic aims: a desire to open up Iranian oil and gas fields to exploitation by American firms, and concern over Iran's growing ties to America's competitors in the global energy market".
The emergence of new economic competitors such as India and China, the impending peak in world oil production and the added importance peak oil production gives to control over supply all lend added impetus to Washington's plans. But western interest in Middle Eastern energy reserves is nothing new and certainly not something that need be the subject of speculation. The US State Department, as far back as 1945, viewed Middle Eastern oil as "a stupendous source of strategic power, and one of the greatest material prizes in world history". British planners in 1947 concurred, describing "a vital prize for any power interested in world influence or domination". In 1956 UK Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd said "We must at all costs maintain control of this oil". And in 1999 Dick Cheney told the Institute for Petroleum that "Oil is unique in that it is so strategic in nature. We are not talking about soapflakes or leisurewear here. Energy is truly fundamental to the world's economy. The [1991] Gulf War was a reflection of that reality".
Indeed it was the promise of this "stupendous source of strategic power" that inspired the US and the UK fifty years ago to topple Iran's parliamentary government and install the dictatorship of the Shah. Tehran had upset the British by nationalising its oil industry, having taken the view that Iran, not the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (later BP) should be the primary beneficiary of its reserves. Winston Churchill's British government continued covert operations begun by the previous Labour administration to organise a coup with the help of the CIA in 1953. The new US/UK friendly administration was savage in the extreme. Amnesty International reported in 1976 that under the Shah Iran had the "highest rate of death penalties in the world, no valid system of civilian courts and a history of torture" which was "beyond belief". In Iran "the entire population was subjected to a constant, all-pervasive terror".
Returning to the present day, moves toward a US attack on Iran have already begun. Details emerged first in an article by award-winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh for the New Yorker and later in the Washington Post. Unmanned surveillance drones have been entering Iranian air-space to search for nuclear facilities and test air-defences since at least late December 2004. Similar incursions have been made by US Special Forces. Both The Times in London and the Jerusalem Post have reported that either the US, Israel in coordination with the White House, or both governments are planning air attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities as early as June 2005. Its often argued that the US infantry is too stretched by its commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan for a new occupation to be contemplated - but in any case a ground invasion is not on the agenda. Instead the right-wing hardliners in the US and Israeli governments imagine that a massive air assault on Iran will precipitate regime change from within. John Pike of globalsecurity.org sets out the thinking in stark terms: "they think that they can just blow up what they want to blow up and let the ant-heap sort itself out afterwards".
What will be the UK's role in any future attack on Iran? Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has said that the prospects of such an attack occurring are "inconceivable". As we have seen, the prospects are eminently conceivable, but we can hardly take Straw's words at face value in any event. This was demonstrated last weekend, when his involvement in formulating the WMD pretext for toppling Saddam Hussein was revealed in a leaked minute of a Downing Street meeting held on 23 July 2002. That meeting acknowledged that the US had already decided to invade Iraq, recommended that Downing Street "should continue to work on the assumption that the UK would take part in any military action", and noted that this left only "the legal issues" to be resolved. Straw said that case was thin. "Saddam was not threatening his neighbours, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea, or Iran". Nevertheless, he continued: "We should work up an ultimatum to Saddam to allow back in the UN weapons inspectors. This would also help with the legal justification for the use of force".
The UK government has shown time and again that it is prepared to plumb the depths of cynicism to an extraordinary degree in order to stand shoulder to shoulder with its US ally. The obvious policy alternative would be to oppose US aggression, and decline to offer the UK's assistance. But this legitimate position, when taken by France, was denounced in shrill tones by Tony Blair as "pathetic" and "dangerous". We need hardly entertain the idea that this "pathetic" and "dangerous" stance is one Blair will adopt in the event of any future US military action against Iran or any other state. The UK has been America's most willing ally for 60 years, and never more so than under New Labour. Even if the political costs were to preclude the direct involvement of UK armed forces, we can certainly expect our government to lend logistical support, as was the case in the Vietnam war, and diplomatic support, at which New Labour excels, to the extent that the Wall Street Journal was moved to describe our Prime Minister as "America's chief foreign ambassador".
Several key factors should lead us to conclude that UK support for US military aggression is far from over. These include the emerging nature of US militarism, the acceleration of this aggressive outlook by a neo-conservative administration, the motives for attacking Iran, the history of US/UK involvement in that country, the plans already being made for such an attack, and the extraordinary depths of London's subservience to Washington. Votes cast in tomorrow's UK elections will not only deliver a verdict on the last war - they will also indicate how easy it will be for New Labour to get involved in the next one.

Dear Diarist,
As I posted in my blog:-
The British election shall roll around, in our own funny little way, and the electors will choose, or sometimes choose not to choose, the people who will oversee what is left of our democracy after most of it has been handed over to the Brussels and Paris steamrollers of EU, but I think that it will be a different bunch to that at present. I recently had a talk with three workmen who were engaged in that traditional British pursuit of digging a hole in a road, and would like to tell you about that very revealing discussion. As I have maybe indicated previously, they don’t count the Labour votes where I live, they weigh them! So when I state that the level of rejection of Blair, and of course of the rejection of the tradition of voting for Labour, is such that men who would never previously have left the Labour fold, are saying either "Not voting," or else, "Lib-Dems," or, "That bloke who is the Durham Cobbler", shows how deeply the solid Labour voter says he has been betrayed!
I may well be totally wrong, and my predictions might be shown to be very silly and totally out of synch with reality, but I think there’ll be a new sheriff in Downing Street on Friday morning!
Regards'
Mike
thanks Mike.
...this isn't about Iran, American militarism or our alliance with Washington though, is it, Mike?...
well, nevermind
you're right that many traditional Labour voters feel deeply betrayed but I don't think its going to translate into a Tory victory. Not unless every single opinion poll is wildly off the mark. Tomorrow night will be interesting, but there probably won't be a change of government. If there is it'd be one of the great political shocks of all time.
Hopefully this election has exposed the deficiencies of the first past the post system in such depessing terms that voters just won't tolerate another election held under these preposterous, arcane rules

The B-liar timeline is fairly simple:
From a letter from Gordon Logan to Reg Keys (the guy who's running against Blair!; see also here) dated April 29, 2005:
"All the discussion on the Iraq war is essentially a diversion. There is a secret clause in the Trident submarine treaty that was signed by Mrs Thatcher in 1983. The secret clause states that the British Prime Minister is required to go to war if he/she gets the order from the President of the United States. You will appreciate that this information explains a lot, notably why Blair has repeatedly gone to war, but only when required to by the Americans. It also explains why Blair is so different from his Labour predecessors, such as Harold Wilson, who refused to send our troops to Vietnam in 1968. The secret agreement was designed by Thatcher to secretly tie the hands of British Prime Ministers for many years to come. Without naming sources, I received this information from a British Army officer a couple of years ago."
In March 2002, Blair received legal advice from the Foreign Office that an attack on Iraq was illegal under international law. The advice was drafted by the Foreign Office's deputy legal adviser, Elizabeth Wilmshurst, who resigned on the eve of war in protest at what she called a 'crime of aggression'.
Blair met with Bush in Crawford April 2002 and received his marching orders - literally! - that Britain must support the American attack on Iraq.
Blair chaired a war meeting with his inner circle in July 2002, in which it was planned to arrange a reason for war. From The Independent:
". . . the Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, had warned that the case against Saddam was 'thin'. He suggested that the Iraqi dictator should be forced into a corner by demanding the return of the UN weapons inspectors: if he refused, or the inspectors found WMD, there would be good cause for war."
From The Times:
". . . at the July meeting Jack Straw, the foreign secretary, said the case for war was 'thin' as 'Saddam was not threatening his neighbours and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran'.
Straw suggested they should 'work up' an ultimatum about weapons inspectors that would 'help with the legal justification'. Blair is recorded as saying that 'it would make a big difference politically and legally if Saddam refused to allow in the UN inspectors'.
A separate secret briefing for the meeting said Britain and America had to 'create' conditions to justify a war."
This trick was necessary as Elizabeth Wilmshurst's legal advice was presented to the meeting.
Blair lied continually from April 2002 to the eve of the attack that the war was not inevitable (needless to say both Blair and Bush lied, as both had determined to attack Iraq in April 2002, but both consistently said the attack was not inevitable if Iraq complied with its obligations to the UN). The lies are particularly odious as the most recent revelations show that the British government was actively trying to guide Saddam into providing the rationale for war by rejecting the weapons inspectors.
The March 2002 advice remains dangerous, to the extent that Blair specifically lied about it:
"Mr Blair was challenged on whether he had seen Foreign Office legal advice in a BBC interview with Jeremy Paxman on 20 April. He replied: 'No, I had the Attorney General's advice to guide me.' In fact, Mr Blair had seen the Foreign Office advice as early as 8 March 2002, in an annex to a secret Cabinet Office 'options paper'. That annex is published in The Independent on Sunday for the first time today.
Asked to account for the discrepancy, a Downing Street spokesman said: 'The Prime Minister accepts his legal advice from the Attorney General, not from individual departments. We are not going to comment on any papers prepared for specific meetings.'"
In 2002 Goldsmith was informed by the most senior Foreign Office lawyers that war without a specific UN resolution would be illegal. He told them he was forbidden to give his view by Tony Blair's office, presumably because they didn't want to hear advice which could have stopped the attack. In autumn 2002 one cabinet minister challenged Blair on why the Government had not yet received formal advice from Goldsmith, and Blair responded: 'I'll ask him when I have to, and not before.' Around this time Goldsmith was telling friends that he believed the war was illegal and feared he might lose his job because he wasn't able to give Blair the right answer. He was unambiguous that an attack on Iraq would not be legal.
As Philippe Sands explains, Blair must not have received any advice from Goldsmith that he didn't need a UN resolution, as Britain made Herculean efforts to get one during January and February 2003. It was only when such efforts failed that the advice needed to be reworked.
Goldsmith was sent off to Washington for 'reeduction', and received a thorough woodshedding:
"On February 11 2003, Lord Goldsmith met with John Bellinger III, legal adviser to the White House's national security council. The meeting took place in the White House. An official told me later: 'I met with Mr Bellinger and he said: 'We had trouble with your attorney; we got him there eventually.''
I put this to Mr Bellinger; he reflected and then told me: 'I do not recall making such a statement,' adding diplomatically, 'I doubt that an individual of Lord Goldsmith's eminence would adopt a legal argument based on pressure from the US government.'"
Bellinger had peeled off the idea that the attack was outright illegal, but there was still some fight left in Goldsmith. On March 7, 2003 Goldsmith sent a 13-page memo to Blair saying the war could be justified without another UN resolution, but that it could be open to legal challenges (which meant war crimes trials, especially as Britain is part of the International Court of Justice). In particular, there was an issue whether Britain could rely on UN resolution 678 concerning the first Gulf War, and it was up to the UN, not Britain and the United States, to determine whether Iraq had defied international calls to disarm. He thought a case for revival of the old UN resolution could be made without a further resolution but only if hard evidence of non-compliance and non-cooperation could be demonstrated. He therefore recommended a further resolution authorising force. Blair's government was sufficiently concerned by this memo that it set up a team of lawyers to prepare for legal action in an international court. Blair recently released this memo under pressure.
On March 13, Goldsmith met with Lord Falconer and Baroness Morgan, members of Blair's inner circle, who put huge pressure on him to declare that the attack was legal.
Admiral Sir Michael Boyce, then chief of the defence staff, demanded an answer on whether the military could be charged with war crimes. On March 17, Goldsmith, having been put through the wringer in both Washington and London, delivered a clean 337-word statement without any of the qualifications of his March 7 or March 13 memos. Goldsmith did not write this statement. It was written (or here) by Lord Falconer and Baroness Morgan.
They say that politics, like sausage making, is something you don't want to know the details of, and this is a particularly good example. In this fiasco of lies, refusal to hear or admit to hearing information you don't want to hear, and convoluted methods of justifying a war that everyone knew was illegal, including manipulating Saddam into providing a reason for war and placing incredible pressure on Lord Goldmith, we can perceive a whiff of the atmosphere which also led to the murder of Dr. Kelly. Bottom line:
Blair knew in March 2002 that the attack on Iraq was illegal, and has known this ever since.
Blair was ordered to attack Iraq by Bush in April 2002.
Blair and his inner circle arranged to set up Saddam in July 2002.
When he couldn't get a UN resolution, Blair arranged for both American and British pressure to be placed on Lord Goldsmith, until he was so worn down that he issued an opinion written by Blair's inner circle.
Blair lied about the state of the legal advice he had been given, and refused to hear advice he knew he wouldn't like.
Both Blair and Bush have consistently lied in claiming that the war was not inevitable.
Tony Blair is a liar and a war criminal.

jon snow asked TB:
'are you going to attack Iran?'
and TB said 'i can categorically state that we are not going to invade iran' which is not the same thing at all.
Hello,
I just want to say "Good luck with the elections" because we Americans didn't have any.
Take care, and in the meantime, build bridges for peace.

They Should Have Dumped Blair Years Ago
The Labour Party isn't an Option Any More
By GILAD ATZMON
London.
In two days the British people are going to vote-in a war criminal to
be
their prime minister for another five years. Not only that Blair is a
war
criminal who initiated an illegal war, following the British press, the
picture is more than clear: the man is a compulsive liar who has
surrounded
himself with morally deteriorated advisers and obedient servants. Even
his
attorney general, Lord Goldsmith, the man who was supposed to uphold
law
within government, doesn't exactly look squeaky clean when put under
scrutiny.
But surely this is not a great novelty. Blair and his Junta didn't
invent a
thing. Politicians are known to be pretty horrible people and if this
is not
enough, ordinary people do tend put their fate into the hands of nasty
politicians. Seemingly, there must be something appealing about mass
murderers. Stalin and Hitler were loved by their people for more than a
while. But then, democracy was supposed to change it all, we were
supposed
to become morally guided peace loving creatures. Somehow, it didn't
happen.
Not only did it not happen, we are now killing in the name of
democracy.
Thinking of Britain in terms of a morally deteriorated democracy we may
as
well draw a lesson from the cases of America and Israel, no doubt, the
two
leading morally deteriorated democracies. The current Israeli prime
minister
is a convicted war criminal. And yet, it didn't stop the Israeli people
from
electing him twice. Needless to say that Sharon, has never laid down
his
weapons, day by day he is engaged in killing Palestinian civilians and
ethnically cleansing those who managed to survive. And yet he enjoys
the
support of the majority of the Israeli people. He is far more popular
than
any serving Israeli prime minister in recent years.
Not at all surprising, we would find that America is no different to
Israel.
In the last American election Bush's success was more than just
marginal,
This time, he won the popular vote. The majority of the American people
believe that the warmonger cowboy is the right man for the job. They
must be
happy with the American expansionist policy in the Middle East.
Thus we are allowed to deduce that it isn't only the British people who
crown a war criminal. People love to be lead by warmongers. But then,
we
should stop for a second and ask ourselves, is Britain as bad as Israel
or
America? Surely, we want to think that Britain is far better off.
In fact, it is the other way around, Britain is far worse. While in
America
and Israel it is the 'right wing', the so called 'lower classes' and
the
'uneducated' who are voting-in war criminals, in Britain it is the
'centre
left' who are doing the Job. In Britain, it is the 'enlightened', 'well
educated' and well-informed broadsheet readers. In Britain it is those
who
read day after day about the PM's lack of integrity. It is those people
who
read daily about the growing numbers of Iraqi civilian victims. True,
they
all admit in public that Mr. Blair is a dreadful choice and yet, they
are
going to vote labour. Furthermore, while in Israel and America the
shift
towards the right is usually blamed on the direct assault on the
American
and Israeli people. British people are yet to become victims of any
direct
terror. British people are voting Blair in spite of his crimes, in
spite of
the horror this man is liable for. This support of Labour cannot be
morally
justified.
Seemingly, Labour supporters developed a unique form of righteous
blindness.
They would say, yes we vote Labour in spite of Blair, we vote for
health and
education. As if the state of the NHS or schools is something to boast
about. They would say, we vote for the economy, they obviously refer to
Blair's prosperous economy, a miraculous success maintained by masses
of
abused illegal immigrants who are working and living in inhuman
conditions.
And yet I am not intending to blame the British voter nor the Labour
supporter, it isn't their fault. In fact the Brits do not have much of
a
choice. They have to choose between the one who initiates the murder of
thousands of Iraqi civilians and the one who supported this illegal war
in
the first place, They have to choose between Blair, the compulsive liar
and
Howard, the tactical liar, a man who declares a populist war against
immigrants whilst praising the British people for letting his Jewish
grandmother escape the Nazis.
Labour is a dead concept and yet, by no means am I suggesting here that
Left
philosophy is over. The idea of equality is as alive as ever, it is
just
those people who were supposed to transform that idea into practice. It
is
them who fooled us completely. It is the Labour party that should have
replaced Blair way before this doomed election. It is the labour party,
once
a major European left institute, nowadays a morally bankrupt
power-seeking
society. True, a few Labour MP's rebelled at the time; some even left
behind
their comfortable seats. But those who were not brave enough to stand
up to
Blair are the real bad guys in this saga. Together with Blair they
betrayed
the very notion of humanism. Being the ruling party, they betrayed the
British people.
Clearly, it was the Labour party that was supposed to spit Blair out
ages
ago. They should have done it not only in order to protect world peace
but
as well, to help Labour regain its moral ground. But now it is too
late, in
two days, when Blair is re-elected, it won't be just about Labour's
moral
bankruptcy. In two days it will be the entire British society that will
lose
its innocence forever.

What still puzzles me is why Blair joined Bush in the war on Iraq.
Anyone knows Bush is stupid, Blair certainly is not.
So why ?
The only explanation I can find is that the creators of Blair, most important Lord Levy (he has a beautiful house in Tel Aviv) created Blair for the attainment of their purposes, whatever they may be.
Both at the time of the expulsion of Jews from Iberian Spain, 1500, and when European anti semitism began, 1870 or so, Jews were accused of being amoral, and just interested in wealth.
Why Jews are interested in wealth eludes me, one cannot eat it.
It just seems to be a tribal pastime.
Alas this pastime now has brought the world on the brink of a nuclear war: Iran may have nuclear weapons, Pakistan certainly has them.
Both countries have missiles capable of reaching Israel.
Nobody can be sure that either Iran does not already have nuclear weapons, or that Mucharraf will be able to control Muslims in the event of a USA and/or Israeli attack on Iran.
Iran liberated itself in 1979 from USA subjugation since 1953; I do not think they will accept subjugation again without war.
The USA senate just decided to sell one hundred bunker penetrating bombs to Israel.
Once they are used, and Jewish fundamentalists are crazy enough to use them, the chain of reactions cannot be controlled b anyone any more.
So the Jewish hobby and/or pastime may be the end of this world.
"Why Jews are interested in wealth eludes me, one cannot eat it.
It just seems to be a tribal pastime."
"the Jewish hobby and/or pastime may be the end of this world"
I'm not surprised you kept your comment anonymous. I'd be embarrassed of this sort of vicious racism myself.
This site will criticise the behaviour of the state of Israel; just as it will criticise the behaviour of any number of states. If anyone, upon reading such criticism, thinks they've found a home for anti-semitic views then I'm afraid they're mistaken.
I don't delete bigoted comments like the one above because I don't think sweeping racism under the carpet helps us defeat it. However, if anyone would like to make a complaint about a comment here please email diarist@democratsdiary.co.uk or democratsdiary@yahoo.co.uk - I can't promise I'll agree but I will get back to you and discuss.
Putting aside the anti-semitic rubbish there is a perception in the middle east that the USA and the UK are being unfair over Iran and nuclear weapons. Israel is seen by many as the "rogue state" with nuclear, chmeical and possibly biological weapons - all the reasons why we went to war with Iraq.
Israel is pushing the USA on this to retain its pre-eminence. As it would be the only nuclear power in the region it would still hold the strategic key. Without that option Israel will need to be more flexible in regional talks. In addition if we expect Iran to sign non proliferation treaties once they acquired nuclear arms, there may be more pressure on Israel to come into line.
Personally I agree that america won't invade; they'll just go for a mass bombardment and maybe try to de-capitate the regime. Blair will support the USA for his own reasons though following on from Gordon Brown's recent comments that the Iraq invasion was in Britain's "economic Interest", I suspect that might be Blair's main aim again.
The perception of double-standards will extend beyond the Middle East, perhaps even into the west - if we're to avoid hypocrisy.
The Ray McGovern piece I cited in my article is worth reading for more on these double-standards.
You're right about the strategic elements of the equation. I'd just add that while Israel is certainly pushing the US to deal with Iran, its pushing an open door.
As for Blair/Brown - Britain was presented with a clear opportunity before the Iraq invasion to shift itself over from being Washington's junior partner to taking its place in a European alliance of equals. The fact that it embraced neo-colonialism represents one of the greatest failures of the progressive movement in British politics. One can at least hope that we raised the political costs of war a little higher yesterday, and that this might have a bearing on whatever choices are made in the future.
To warn a person about snakes in the grass is not a reason for saying somone is anti-snake.
Likewise to warn people about zionism and some of its jewish and non jewish followers does not make one anti-semitic.
Let's be clear about this. To say that Jews are essentially avaricious is racist. That's if the word racism has any meaning.
Racism (and I'm sorry this needs to be explained) is the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior or inferior to another.
Criticising the actions of the Israeli state, or criticising agressive Israeli nationalism is of course not racism. But lets not pretend that's what's at issue here.
The anonymous comment at 4.55 yesterday said - "Why Jews are interested in wealth eludes me, one cannot eat it. It just seems to be a tribal pastime. the Jewish hobby and/or pastime may be the end of this world". Hitler would have been proud of those words. They fit right into the narrative of centuries of anti-jewish racism, and they don't get any better with age.
"Racism (and I'm sorry this needs to be explained) is the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior or inferior to another".
Not going to disagree with the above. However, Anti-semitism often arises simply because the Jews themselves do consider they are the very thing which you have just descibed.
I am not the anonymous who made that remark, but it is hard for individuals not to observe certain cultural differences and make remarks. A lot of famous writers have done this. Was Charles Dickens anti-semitic when he wrote Oliver Twist?
You may be right, but I just believe, that what a person thinks to be an honist observation, should not be jumped upon as being anti this or that.
I believe Hitler was not wrong about everything, wether about race or other matters. Does this now make me a Hitler lover. If I said, I thought the Germans were a war mongering race, would you consider that comment worthy of being banned?
Sorry, but I just think the world is a worse place when an individual can't make a knee jerk comment (be it right or wrong) without being labled, as this that or the other.
Thanks for your responce
So which Jews is it that consider themselves to be of an essentially avaricious race exactly? I'm not sure I understand the point you're trying to make there.
Still, I'm glad you're not going to disagree with the definition of the word racism. The original remarks fitted that description. They were therefore racist. When racist remarks are made they're liable to be described as such. Those comments were not rational observations about cultural difference, as you contend. They were bigoted denigrations of an entire people.
I don't consider any remarks worthy of being banned, but if you said the Germans are a war mongering race, then yes, that would be racist.
Still struggling with this? Here's that definition again - Racism is the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior or inferior to another.
I'm sorry if you think the world is a worse place when an individual can't make a racist comment without being labelled a racist. I guess that's just how it is. Political correctness gone mad, perhaps?
If you still find yourself struggling, might I suggest you go on to read something about the Holocaust, Spain's conquest of Latin America and Apartheid South Africa? You could start here http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0195085574/qid=1115388297/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/026-7927299-7381203
btw I suspect that by not enquiring as to where you think Hitler was right I'm probably doing you a bit of a favour, wouldn't you say?
"So which Jews is it that consider themselves to be of an essentially avaricious race exactly? I'm not sure I understand the point you're trying to make there."
Check you history on the Mafia and organised crime.
You are right I do not like political correctness gone mad.
I will try to improve my reading on the subjects you mention. Perhaps you might also like to take a deeper look at the Russian revolution and some of its leaders.
Did not suggest that Hitler was right about everything, but he did bring that nation out of the 1930's doldrums, with a deal of support from its people.
However, I can tell from your response that we are not going to agree on much.
I will therefore end our corrispondence. Suspect you will wish to have the final say.
Thank You.
no, not at all. after your latest effort I'm quite happy for you to have the last word. you've saved me the trouble.
GERMANY'S WAR, A Brief Summary.
The following articles are brief summaries taken from a brand new work compiled by Amalek Productions, who have spent over 15 years studying the history of Germany's struggle in the 20th century through two World Wars. It provides a controversial viewpoint on the history of the run-up to the Second World War. This brief summary, is but a tiny snippet of a large work - available only on CD-Rom through the Truth Campaign - which covers numerous aspects of the history of the Wars from Germany's perspective.
THE ROAD TO WAR
Our History leads us to believe that the German people had an inborn irrational hatred of Jews and were only waiting for someone like Hitler to come along and allow them to express it. Nothing could be further from the truth. For many years, when Germany was still a Monarchy the Jews integrated very well into German Society and many prospered and contributed much towards the country. Because of this many thousands of Jews who were being persecuted in other European countries such as Russia and Poland fled to Germany looking for peace & safety. For almost seventy years we have been told how the Germans suddenly contracted a form of madness and started hating and murdering Jews. We have been told a million times how BAD the Germans were, on this page we offer you a fast and incomplete overview of how the build up to WW2 started long before Hitler was elected!
1897 : The First Zionist Congress was held in Basel Switzerland under the leadership of THEODOR HERZL. Zionism is the political arm of Judaism and it was created to fulfil Jewish political ambitions, which included the creation of a Jewish homelands. It is claimed Protocols of these meetings were kept and these 'Protocols' have been a source of trouble ever since.
1905 : The first copy of 'The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion' surfaces in Russia, a year later in London. The Protocols are, it is claimed by many, to be the plans for Zionist World Domination. The Jews vehemently deny this and claim the Protocols are forgeries. But humans tend to act on their beliefs, not on facts. Millions of people world wide believe the Protocols were written by the Jews, Adolf Hitler and many of his party members had read the Protocols, you should read them too so you can judge for yourself!
1914 : World War One breaks out in Europe. Do you know Why? Because Germany was growing into a major European economic power and Gt. Britain, France & Russia felt threatened by this industrious nation. THATS WHY!
1916 : Gt. Britain & France are losing the war. German Zionist groups approach the British War Office with an offer to bring the United States into the war IF the British Govt. promises to give Palestine to the Jews as a Jewish homeland. The British agree. Lord Balfour gives the 'BALFOUR DECLARATION' to Lord Rothschild. President Wilson was then blackmailed by the US Zionists (to whom he owed a lot of money) into dragging the USA into WW1.
1917 : The Bolshevik Revolution begins in Russia, The Bolsheviks were led by Jews who hated the Tsarist Regime, the Bolshis were funded with more than $20 million dollars from the US- Jewish Bankers Jakob Schiff and KUHN-LOEB. After many assassination attempts the Russian Tsarist family is forced to abdicate and are imprisoned by Bolshevik revolutionaries, a year later they are murdered by the same Revolutionaries.
1918 : Germany is defeated, not militarily on the front line but on the home front, stirred on by their success the Russian Bolsheviks send large amounts of money and weapons and agitators to Germany who cause massive unrest, strikes and upheavals amongst Dock and factory workers, destroying the military supply lines to the troops at the front. The Bolsheviks have planned to take over Germany, France, Gt. Britain, Hungary and Spain. The Jewish Bolshevik leaders in Germany Karl Radek, Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxembourg try a revolutionary takeover in Berlin but are captured and later executed. The German Kaiser abdicates fearing the same fate as his Russian Tsarist relatives. 'The Protocols of Zion' demand the removal of all Monarchies, they are quickly being fulfilled...unless you believe they are forgeries, in which case they are still being fulfilled. In this same year Poland takes advantage of Germany's defeat and annexes large areas of German territory.
1919 : The VERSAILLES TREATIES are signed in Paris. Although the Zionists had not fought in the war 117 Zionists arrived in Paris led by Mr B M Baruch, they carry with them the Balfour Declaration and demand the British keep their promise to give them Palestine. If any ethnic group in your country sold you out to an enemy forcing you to lose a war, would you consider that sellout to be an act of HATE & TREASON? So did the Germans, but they did NOTHING against the Jews that sold them out. Poland sets up the first CONCENTRATION CAMPS in Europe imprisoning tens of thousands of ethnic Germans and Ukrainians and the Russian Bolsheviks set up the GULAGS and imprison almost everyone.
1920: Large Jewish Banks in the USA invest in German Industry and make large loans to Germany to rebuild after WW1, not because they like Germans but they know a healthy industry brings back healthy profits and large loans bring in large Interest payments. Poland annexes more German territory and starts driving tens of thousands of Germans off their lands and out of their homes.
1923 : Germany can no longer pay the more than 270 BILLION REICHSMARKS in reparations to the Allies, they can no longer afford to buy their own coal back from the Allies to drive their factories and heat their ovens, the Germans go into 'passive resistance', France & Belgium send in troops. Moscow backed Bolshevik/ Jewish Revolutionaries start armed revolts in various cities around Germany, such as Hamburg & Bremen. The Revolutionaries are aided and abetted in their attempts at creating chaos by the International Jewish Bankers in New York who send the German currency (Reichsmark), which is tied into the International Exchange rate, into a dive. Within months the Reichsmark is worthless. Unable to feed their families or pay rents, millions of Germans are forced to sell all they own. The altered exchange rates means that $1 US dollar is worth many TRILLIONS of Reichsmarks. For only a few dollars, Jewish-American Investors buy up German Businesses, Industries, Homes, Land, Artworks, Jewellery. By the end of the year the German Govt. manages to create a new currency and the madness is halted. Millions of Germans have lost everything they own, thousands have starved to death. The Jewish Investors became incredibly rich. The Germans still do nothing against these speculators, just the opposite, many of them gain high political and respectable positions in German Society.
1933 : Bolsheviks and National Socialists are now fighting for control of Germany. The Germans see what is happening to the Russian people under Bolshevism and vote overwhelmingly for Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler is very clear about the role played by the Jews in Germany's defeat in WW1 and the currency devaluation of…
1923-24 and decides to deport ALL of them to Palestine (as also promised by the British). However the British now need Arab oil so they blockade Hitler's efforts to send the Jews to Palestine. Only weeks after Hitler is elected and because of Hitler's decision to deport Jews from Germany, American Zionist groups, seeing their sphere of influence in Europe dwindling, DECLARE WAR ON GERMANY on the 24th March…
1933 : Now the Germans have had enough!! The Germans stage a ONE DAY Boycott of Jewish shops and businesses....a FULL ONE DAY!
1936 : The Bolsheviks are still trying to take over Spain. Hitler sends troops to help General Franco. Thousands of German Jews travel to Spain to support the Bolsheviks and fight against the 'Fascists'.
1939 : 1st Sept 1939 Midnight, Poland Declares war on Germany, Radio Warsaw claiming that Polish troops would be in Berlin by the end of the week. (Poland had 40 Infantry Divisions up against 35 German divisions and were on home ground.) 5 hours later Hitler moved his troops into Poland. 3rd Sept. Gt. Britain and France Declare war on Germany. 3rd Sept 1939 Polish Militia slaughter 5,700 German civilians in Bromberg. 6th Sept 1939, Chaim Weizmann Head of the Jewish Agency for Palestine officially joins the Allies in the war.
So if we add up we have: Two Jewish Declarations of war, Gt. Britain & The British Commonwealth, France and Poland declare war on Germany and then they have the nerve to say Hitler started the war. Hitler wasn't even in power when they decided to control Germany!
1948 : Three years after the war, Israel officially declares Germany to be 'An Enemy of the State of Israel'
Fascinating.
Presumably, this bit of history was written by a qualified, reputable expert and/or came from a trustworthy source?
Just that otherwise it rather looks like some self-serving fiction dreamed up by Nazi-sympathisers.
Most of our establishment historians spend a few month writing junk history.
Why waste 15 years to write or produce self serving fiction.
Someone seems have his or her head in the sand.
You're missing the point, my friend. If you assert something you need proof. That's how people know its true, as opposed to self-serving fiction dreamed up by Nazi-sympathisers, or some racist fantasy you've cut and pasted from a dodgy website. The words alone don't make it true. And as long as what you assert is pure invention, we're not having a serious discussion and you're wasting our time.
I am sure those facts are capable of being checked, easy by anyone wishing to do so.
But you are right, I personally can not prove them, at this point in time, anymore than I can prove historical information provided by our TV, Press, Politicians, and Historians or even your, perhaps dodgy, website.
Henry Ford, did not say that, History is bunk, for nothing. But then I can't prove that, just now.
As you wish, I will not waste your time anymore.
Thank You.
Dear Diarist,
After reading the strange view of recent "history" as published by your anonymous contributor,
I wonder if we live in the same universe or even space/time continuum! From a person who states that
according to him (or her), the Second World War was started by POLAND, and further tries to legitimise
the reign of terror against the Jewish population by stating that the Germans had instigated
a boycott of Jewish shops for ONE day, forgetting the ensuing torrent of legislation against Jews and
Jewish property!
I thought that the bigotry and stupidity ended when the killing machines of Belsen and Auschwitz were
exposed to a horrified world; obviously we have a person contributing who thinks that writers such as
David Irving are reputable historians! This self-serving view of the history of the Twentieth Century
only gives light to the truth that states, "if you shout a lie loud enough, some pillock will take it as gospel!"
p.s. I don't think your website is dodgy!
Regards,
thanks, Mike.
like you, I don't think one can account for this by trying to divine some elusive logic that might lie behind these fantasies. Views like these are constructed to serve an essentially emotional purpose; here ultra-nationalism or racism. Its impossible to debate or converse on a level with assertions that lie outside the realms of fact and rationality, so I see no value in trying.
and what's more, Mike - I don't think my website's dodgy either. In fact, I quite like it.
Nice to see revisionist history is still being believed. Do they throw the facts up in the air and just grab the little bits they like?
http://www.jewsagainstzionism.com/antisemitism/holocaust/gedalyaliebermann.cfm
People, check out this site. It has always confused me that within the area I work there are many ultra-orthodox jews who are very anti-zionist. This site is actually authentic, and goes some way to explain things. I mention it as the 'pro-nazi' fellow above actually refers (unknowingly) to some of the 'history/facts' documented here.
Is an interesting site - let's see what you make of it once you've explored abit.
The anonymous breif commentry on the cause of the second and 1st world war,is infantile, and inaccurate on a number of issues which time in this could not unfortunately be taken to outline.
The comment on Poland declaring war on Germany is false,as it is even recorded in their own Nazi history, by Goabbals diaries tha, and other documents, that concentration camp prisoners were killed and dressed in Polish uniforms, outside a german radio station on the border, and usded as an excuse for hitler to invade poland on this pretext of Poland attacking first,
Also the real nature of Nazi racism,is self evident in the lenghts it went to to try and prove a superman theory of the GERMANIC races.
That the Jews had there own racialist views is a fact that can not be denied. There also was the intellegensia of the Jews of that era,as psychologists and socialists who challenged and denied such religous based theories.
That Marx Meyeling and Engels German Jews never proposed Zionism, but condemed it as the opioum of the people is beyond historic doubt.
That they were Jews has no bearing,to a universal appeal this ideology had for the oppressed and poor of the world at that time.
That Communism and Zionism had a common aim, is a ridicoulous and false nonsence.
The ideologies were and still are in total contridiction of each other.
Well I for one will not waste any more breathe on the dangerous and distorted historic events they try to shoehorn into revisionist history, to justify there own racialist or facist inclinations,
